The group had announced a union organizing effort in February, but very often such campaigns fall short of filing to hold a vote. Union organizing efforts have picked up in the last year, especially in the wake of a number of high profile contract wins by unions that provided union members with large pay raises. There are more than 21,000 Disneyland “cast member” employees, who are represented by more than a dozen unions. But it doesn’t include the performers who dress up as characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy and interact with visitors. Vo said it’s difficult for cast members to afford living on their own, and many have roommates.

The union said on Tuesday that about 60% of the 1,700 Disneyland employees in the characters and parades departments have signed cards seeking a union representation election. Performers doing the same work at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, are already in a union and have been for years. And until recently the Disney World performers were paid more than their Disneyland counterparts, according to the union. The Disneyland performers had been getting $20 an hour until the union organizing drive began late last year. “But magic alone doesn’t pay the rent.”The union already represents some of the Disney World performers.

Workers who bring Disneyland’s beloved characters to life — including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Cinderella — are looking to unionize. Labor organizers announced the campaign Tuesday, saying performers want better safety conditions and scheduling policies to help keep the magic alive for visitors. While most of the more than 35,000 workers at the Disneyland Resort already have labor unions, about 1,700 performers and character actors do not. “This isn't one of those situations where we're out making the employer the bad guy,” said Kate Shindle, president of Actors' Equity Association, which would represent the performers. Disneyland officials said in a statement that they believe cast members deserve the right to a confidential vote.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The field of candidates onstage for the fourth Republican presidential debate will be the smallest yet. To qualify for the fourth debate, candidates needed at least 6% support in two national polls or 6% in one national poll as well as two polls from four of the early-voting states — Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. During the last debate, Haley called the entrepreneur “scum” after he invoked Haley’s daughter during a critique of TikTok. Without Trump at the debates, Christie has been left without his intended target but has brought him up nonetheless. Instead of going to Alabama — or holding his own counterprogramming event, as he has done for past debates — Trump is holding a closed-door campaign fundraiser in Florida.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The field of candidates onstage for the third Republican presidential debate will be the smallest yet. Five hopefuls will participate in Wednesday night’s debate at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, according to the Republican National Committee. After the second debate in September, Ramaswamy asked the RNC to change its rules for the third, requesting that participation be limited to four candidates, with a unique donor requirement of 100,000. In a tight election, amid questionable economic conditions and with the normality that Biden promised in 2020 still fleeting, the threat may be greater than ever. A pseudo general election campaignBoth Trump and Biden showed up in Michigan courting blue-collar votes this week. He returned to the theme that democracy is under attack – seemingly a slam dunk given Trump’s week of autocratic outbursts and demagoguery. And all previous evidence suggests that, among GOP voters at least, Trump legal travails only boost his poll numbers and fundraising. To anyone who has forgotten the constant tearing at legal, political and constitutional norms that characterized almost every day of the last presidency, Gaetz and his fellow MAGA troops are proving that Trumpism sows chaos.

ROME, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Fans from across Europe and the United States travelled to Rome in high spirits for the 44th Ryder Cup, enjoying warm weather and bringing a blaze of colour to the Eternal City as the action got underway on Friday. It is the first time the event has been held in Italy, attracting a host of local fans alongside more regular visitors from afar. "This is my eighth Ryder Cup, we are veterans," said Andy Nichol, who came with his friends from England and had British flags all over his suit, including on his tie and hat. While many American fans felt the food and drinks were fairly priced considering the popularity of the event, visitors from Europe voiced some criticism. However, visitors generally agreed the Marco Simone was a fine course, the event was well organised and the Ryder Cup was different from any other golf tournament.

Biden's remarks in Phoenix, Arizona, will also honor the legacy of the late Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee who died in 2018. Biden will warn "there is something dangerous happening in America," according to prepared remarks of his speech. Biden will say he doesn't think all Republicans ascribe to the 'MAGA' agenda, a reference to Trump's Make America Great Again slogan. He has stepped up his warnings about the potential threat to democracy posed by Trump as exemplified by the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The White House official said Biden's remarks in Tempe, Arizona, near Phoenix, will be the fourth in a series of speeches about the threat to democracy.

Republican presidential candidates talk over each other during the second Republican candidates' debate of the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, September 27, 2023. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a frequent Trump critic, chimed in, saying Trump was "afraid" and mocking him as "Donald Duck" for skipping the debate. Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the November 2024 election, was also a frequent target for the Republican candidates, who castigated his handling of the economy and the southern border with Mexico. "They're all job candidates," Trump said dismissively of the seven Republicans at the debate. It does a ton of business in China, which many GOP voters view as a threat to the US. DeSantis already ran on being anti-Disney — and wonTaryn Fenske, DeSantis' communications director, has described the Disney fight as being "the will of Florida voters." And they might not vote for DeSantis if they think the Disney fight is a killer in a general election. Families often work hard and save for years to take their children to Disney World. If DeSantis can't bring a resolution to the Disney fight, can he handle the job of president?
DeSantis warned that Disney hadn't seen the last of their feud: "There's more to come." "There's a lot of little back and forth going on now with the state control," DeSantis said, the audience booing at the mention of Disney. The governor-appointed board is talking to lawyersIn his new book, DeSantis has a chapter about the dust-up with Disney and how he retaliated against the company. He even revealed that he and his wife, Casey DeSantis, got married at Walt Disney World — a fact first reported by Insider. "The media STILL doesn't realize that Governor DeSantis always thinks 10 steps ahead," Christina Pushaw from the governor's rapid response team wrote on Twitter.
The New York Times' nonfiction book critic Jennifer Szalai tore into Ron DeSantis' book on Monday. Szalai wrote that DeSantis' new book "reads like a politician's memoir churned out by ChatGPT." Szalai is a full-time book critic and writes weekly book reviews for The Times. The new DeSantis book gives readers a closer look at his life"The Courage to Be Free," a deeper look into DeSantis' life, was released on February 28. DeSantis was hesitant to get married at Disney World, he revealed in his new book. Ron DeSantis may have had a fairy tale wedding with Casey DeSantis at the Walt Disney World Resort back in 2009 — but he's no Disney adult, according to his new book. He thought he and Casey DeSantis, née Black, would get married at a local church, he wrote. He had originally planned on wearing a tux, he said, but Casey DeSantis asked him to wear his Navy service dress white uniform instead. He realized that he needed to go to a tailor to get his outfit ready so that they could properly mount his medals on the suit.
Fans are lobbying for TikTok creator Sean Dorrough to replace Justin Roiland in 'Rick and Morty.' Fans have flooded Dorrough's accounts, tagging Adult Swim and leaving comments like "Replace Justin for Rick and Morty," and "Any calls from Adult Swim yet?" Dorrough told Insider he'd reached out to Roiland about a year ago after noticing an interview in which Roiland mentioned Dorrough's impressions. And, Dorrough told Insider, it's why he doesn't "dub a lot of cartoons." As a spokesperson previously told Insider, "Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland."
